Born 1969 in Beverwijk, the Netherlands; lives in Berlin.
Studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Rijksakademie.

The films, photographs, objects, and installations of Willem de Rooij examine the historical, social and political aspects of image production. The framing conditions of art, and the reflection on other artist’s works are recurring themes. With Jeroen de Rijke he represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennial 2005. Major solo exhibitions were held at K21, Duesseldorf (2007), and the New National Gallery, Berlin, where the installation „Intolerance“ introduced historical artefacts to the context of contemporary art.
