Expansive heather and bog areas at the Vechta lowland have been cultivated and reforested. The Samerott, a 266-acre large communal forest beyond the Vechte, is of particular cultural significance. The forest shareholders, so-called “Mahlmänner,” are farmers from the region. Remnants of the Raven Tree, which provided a hideout for fugitive Anabaptists and served as a meeting place for the shareholders, are located in the Samerott. In the future, it is planned that historical exhibitions be shown at the nearby Schulze-Holmer farmstead.

The project »Topography of commonness« by Christoph Schäfer is located in Samern.
