bad bentheim

The city and its comital castle are situated on an anticline to the south of Bentheim Forest. The bright reddish sandstone has been economic foundation of the upper county since the fifteenth century and was transported by ship on the Vechte. A park, arranged as a geometrical garden, was laid out between 1710 and 1713 at the foot of the castle. Its lanes extend radially into the nearby 780-acre large forest. Remnants of the woodland pasture with the bizarre growth of its pruned trees dating from the time when pigs were bred there can be seen there today.
